PHOTOBIOMODULATION

Photobiomodulation is a fancy word for Red Light Therapy. We use it to activate mitochondria. What are mitochondria and why do we want to activate them?

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells, they convert nutrients we consume into energy (ATP - Adenosine Triphosphate) that powers 90% of our cellular function. So the more mitochondrial density we have and the more efficiently they function, the better we feel. Mitochondrial dysfunction which severely affects quality of life is becoming more and more common.

The foundations of optimizing mitochondrial function are:

  • Restorative sleep

  • Exercise, especially High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), moderate endurance exercise and resistance training (muscles are dense in mitochondria)

  • Caloric restriction in the form of fasting or time restricted eating

  • Reducing inflammation through diet and environment

  • Lowering levels of stress

Mitochondrial efficiency can also be improved by supplements and certain modalities.

Supplements that enhance ATP production include; the antioxidants CoQ10, PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) and Sulforaphane and potentially NAD+ and its derivatives that support the electron transport chain.

Modalities that support ATP production mechanisms include: cold thermogenesis, vibration on a vibration plate, infrared sauna and photobiomodulation amongst others.

On our Rēset Programs we include use of our photobiomodulation lamp by Platinum LED, which emits wavelengths of visible red and near infrared light at specific frequencies between 630nm and 850nm. The wavelengths that it uses can be absorbed by the mitochondria to protect from nitric oxide damage and activate the Nrf2 pathway to improve ATP production. Studies have shown that photobiomodulation can help to reduce recovery time, inflammation and pain, stimulate hair collagen synthesis and hair growth, increase testosterone, improve circulation and more. These results are most likely because of the improvement in the efficiency of the mitochondria.
